History
Siemens was established on 12 October, 1847 in Berlin, a major city in Germany. Its founder is Werner Von Siemens. Its headquarters is in Munich, Germany.
The first long-distance telegraph line in Europe was built by this company in 1848. After two years, (1850) Carl Wilhelm Siemens, the younger brother of the founder became its representative in London, UK. After that, Siemens started producing long distance telegraph network in Russian. In 1867, the company fully completed its telegraph line from Calcutta, India to London.
World’s first electric street light powered by AC alternator was installed in the town of Godalming(England) by this company in 1881. Then,it continued introducing a wide variety of products including light bulbs and electric trains. The founder retired in 1890, and then company was taken by his sons and brother.
Incorporation
In 1897, Siemens and Halske (S&H) was incorporated. It was then merged with Schuckert & Co. In 1907, Siemens& Halske and Siemens-Schuckert became the seventh largest company in Germany by the number of employees. At that time,its total employees were 34,324.
In 1907, S&H jointly formed Osram light bulbCompany with two other companies. In 1923, a Japanese subsidiary was established. After 1920, S&H began manufacturing radios, TV sets and electronic microscopes. In 1932, it was again merged. After that, company constructed the first of its design, Hydro power station in Ireland.
Siemens AG
In 1950 onwards, S&H started manufacturing washing machines, computers, pacemakers and semi-conductor devices. In 1966, it was merged with Siemens-Schuckertwerke (SSW) and Siemens-Reiniger-Werke (SRW) to form Siemens AG. Its first digital telephone exchange was made in 1980.
