Ufone has launched this virtually unlimited mobile internet package with a 4GB limit per day, at extremely low rate, i.e. 99 Paisas per day (no additional taxes) – that’s 29.70 rupees per month.

You will have to believe what I just said, except there’s a catch. This package is available during 1 AM to 3 PM next day; meaning that 14 hours a day. Even then Rs. 1 per day is nothing, I would say, for what they are offering.

Warid has introduced Glow Dosti, a revamped package aimed at Pakistani youth.

Warid claims that Glow Dosti will offer its users with an opportunity to talk to their friends and family at lowest possible calling rates. This would be coupled with SMS and GRPS bundles.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has announced theme of 2012 World IP Day as “Visionary Innovators”. It has been narrated that behind every great innovations, either artistic or technical, is a human story a tale in which new pathways open as a result of the curiosity, insight or determination of individuals.

According to current year theme, elaborate arrangements had been made in Pakistan to design the World IP Day celebrations truly representative according to the thematic approach as decided by WIPO by giving opportunities to the innovators and relating creatures of different fields.

Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi, Chairman IPO-Pakistan said the event of World IP Day will be celebrated, on April 26th, in a befitting manner with participation of all the stakeholders in different fields including computer software.

He said that different technical session would also be arranged in which IP experts would highlight the importance of intellectual property right.

There would also be the need to aware the general masses and other people relating to different areas about critical role of IP rights and their impacts on social as well as economic sectors.

The Chairman said that significant importance would be given to the creative work of students and innovators. An exhibition would also be organized as side events of national conference. Geographical Indications (GI) of different areas of Pakistan would be displayed on the occasion. This Conference would provide exclusive platform to introduce Pakistan’s famous products in the country and also abroad.

Media reports are suggesting that a parliamentary committee on Information and Broadcasting is considering to impose Radio Tax of Rs. 2 per each Rs. 100 card to be deducted on all reloads.

Reportedly, Information Minister Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan was present in the committee meeting and that she was so concerned about national radio that she proposed Rs. 2 to be deducted from each card of Rs. 100 in account of Radio tax.

Media, citing Dr. Awan, said that this tax will be applicable after annual budget 2011-12.

Telecom industry has immediately responded and termed this kind of collection a nonsense. They said that Telecom industry isn’t responsible for an organization which is sinking for its own reasons.

“Telecom operators won’t become collection service for the government, we will severely oppose this”, said an official of a mobile company. He rather proposed government to use utility bills for any kind of charity collection.

If imposed, Telecom industry to going to get a hit on their businesses.

Mobile phone operators are already paying highest taxes in Pakistan, as compared to other sectors. In addition, mobile subscribers are also bearing several kind of service charges.

It merits mentioning here that telecom subscribers, last year, had to pay 1.5 percent additional withholding tax named as flood surcharge.

Google has partnered with Mobilink to offer its Gmail users an ability to send free text messages to any Mobilink number from their Gmail accounts or through Google Chat.

Gmail offers this facility for limited operators throughout the world, and Mobilink is the first operator they have collaborated with in Pakistan.

With this service Mobilink subscribers can also reply back to SMS messages sent from Google chat, which will appear on Gmail user’s Gmail interface.

It merits mentioning here that first message has to be sent by a Gmail user via Gmail chat client. This means that Mobilink subscriber cannot initiate chat himself/herself with his Gmail contacts from mobile phone.

How to send SMS to Mobilink Numbers:

Gmail users will have to simply Log into their account. In the Send SMS box above Chat, enter the Mobilink phone number you want to send a SMS.

Next a window will appear (shown below) where you can check the country code and phone number of the SMS recipient to save this contact to build your address book. Next time you will be able to send SMS to same number by typing his/her name.

Next a chat-window will pop on right bottom, simply type the message and hit enter… that’s it.

Your message will be sent to the phone number you entered.

How Mobilink Subscribers Respond to Gmail Chat SMS?

To respond to the message received from Gmail user, simply reply from mobile. Reply will appear on Gmail interface of Gmail user.
Mobilink subscriber can reply to the message received from Gmail user within 24 hours.

Election Commission Pakistan Vote Checking Through SMS from March 1st Eligible voters will soon be able verify the status of their votes in the new computerized voter lists prepared by Election Commission of Pakistan by just sending an via mobile phones from anywhere, any time across the country, reported Daily Times citing an official of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

This long awaited service is going to see the light of the day on March 1st, 2012, said the report. After the service is launched, registered voters would be able to check the status of their votes and particulars through short messaging services (SMS).

You will get a reply with your vote status
Service Charges: Rs. 2 plus tax

Details suggest that sending an SMS with Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) number to 8300 will subsequently receive a message of around 160 characters in Urdu.

It will have the name, village/city, tehsil and district of the particular voter, location (electoral area) and serial number of vote registered in the preliminary electoral rolls.

The house number of voters will be kept confidential to ensure privacy and avoid misuse of the service.

After the introduction of the new service, it would be the responsibility of every eligible voter to make sure that his/her vote had been registered and to report any discrepancy to the ECP, said the media report.

Abu Dhabi Group (ADG) has indicated to launch an independent mobile financial services company through join-venture of Bank Alfalah and Warid, an official press statement said.

The group will enter into Pakistan’s mobile-banking industry with combination of two subsidiaries that will develop a branchless and electronic eco-system comprising products and value proposition for merchants, businesses, consumers and the government sector.

Ali Abbas Sikander will be heading the mobile-banking wing of Abu Dhabi Group. He worked with prominent international banks and led successful e-banking and branchless banking projects earlier in Pakistan and abroad.

The name of service brand has not been exposed clearly, however there will be number of small businesses and employment generated and rapid transactions of money will be carried out easily.

ADG is one of largest investors in Pakistan and has been operating in the country since 1997. The group companies have over $6.5 billion in total assets in Pakistan. ADG has invested in banking, telecommunications, real estate, insurance, sugar, asset management and health care sectors.

Youth brand Djuice recognized the students’ efforts at ‘breaking the silence – Khamoshi ka Boycott’.

All the students are poor and belong to far-flung areas but had secured more than 90% marks in their Matriculation examination by instilling in themselves a drive for a better tomorrow.

Budget Android phones have become very popular lately and Samsung Galaxy Y is the cheapest one in the market if you ignore the IDEOS handsets being offered by a couple of telecom providers.

ProPakistani got its hands on a test unit and here’s what we make of it.

Appearance:

Samsung Galaxy Y is a small phone and fits into the hand snugly. It has a 3.0 inch screen and as with most touch phones of this size, it’s not for you if you have big hands. The back is plastic but certainly doesn’t look so and with the chrome rim, it gives the phone an expensive look.

Samsung Galaxy Y has a candy bar design and has three buttons on the front. One is the physical home button and two are capacitive. There’s no ambient light sensor or front facing camera but a proximity sensor is provided.

The left side of the Samsung Galaxy Y has the volume rocker and the right side of the phone has the power/sleep button. The top has the 3.5mm jack and the microUSB port.

Interface:

The interface of the Samsung Galaxy Y is similar to the ones on other Samsung Android handsets. It comes with TouchWiz UI on top of Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), which is a pleasant surprise.

You can have up to 7 home screens populated with apps etc. The bottom of the screen has four shortcuts for contacts, dialer, messages and menu.

Swipe down from the top and you get the notifications bar. Here you can quickly toggle Bluetooth, GPS among other options and it shows other information about active connections, downloads and missed events amongst other things as well.

Apps in the menu can be accessed by swiping horizontally. A prolonged press of the physical button brings up recent apps and the task manager where you can kill applications and see usage of the 290MB of the available RAM.

We want to add that the text looks a bit fuzzy and its not as pretty as one would want it to be but all Android functionality is present and at this price, we can’t really complain.

Performance:

The 832 MHz processor is good enough for general usage, apps and web browsing. We didn’t experience any glitches in the graphics but the resolution, 320×240, is a bit low and there were quite a few apps and games that didn’t perform well and some even refused to work at all.

Contacts and Messaging:

The phonebook leaves nothing to be desired. It has every functionality one could think of and its loaded with TouchWiz which provides some really handy shortcuts.

Texting on a 3.0 screen was always going to be a chore. It has the usual portrait virtual keyboard and it switches it to its landscape version when tilted to the side. Things get a little cramped but with a little practice one could get used to it.

The window in which you see what you have typed is too small for our comfort. What I love about texting in the Galaxy Y however, is Swype. When activated, you don’t have to lift your finger and you can just drag your finger over the keyboard to form a word.

Accuracy is high and we were very pleased with it. There is an option for voice input too but while it’s accurate enough it takes too much time. Other input options include handwriting recognition. Texts are shown in the popular threaded view which is good. Adding multimedia content will automatically turn the text into a MMS.

Camera:

Samsung Galaxy Y has a 2.0 megapixel camera and quality is adequate. Flash is absent and the maximum resolution it can capture is 1600×1200. The provided features and user interface are both good. Some features include smile detection and panorama mode among others. The camcorder mode can capture video in QVGA format at 15 frames per second.

Multimedia:

The video player is basic and doesn’t run DivX or Xvid videos. MP4, WMV and H.264 formats are supported and run pretty well. The gallery provides some nice transition effects and 3D views.

The music player on Samsung Galaxy Y is feature rich and Samsung has thrown in TouchWiz UI in it too. Navigation is easy and plenty of features are provided to organize music as you want. An equalizer is provided as well and the audio quality is good. The loudspeaker volume is little bit on the low side but only slightly. FM is also present for those fond of radio.

Connectivity:

In the connectivity department, Galaxy Y has Wi-fi, Bluetooth and a microUSB port. You can also use the phone as a mobile Wi-fi hotspot.

Apps:

It has the usual set of apps like Youtube, Gmail and Google maps. QuickOffice is included for viewing documents. The Android market works well. We would like to point out that in some games and apps which were overcrowded with buttons, the touch on the phone lagged and even became unresponsive in some cases.

Price & Conclusion:

The Galaxy Y is available for Rs. 14,000 from most mobile retailers. We were impressed with the feature set of the phone but we were disappointed with the low resolution of 320×240 as well as the 2MP camera. But it runs Android and tradeoffs are always there so we can’t really complain.

Verdict:

There isn’t a lot of choice if you want to look for an Android phone in the sub 15k range so that tips the scale in Galaxy Y’s favor. For someone with a feature phone and thinking of going for a smartphone it would be quite ideal and is strongly recommended.
